HOW TO MAKE
A NONMAGE INTO A MAGE

Last update: Fri. January 25 2008

In many game worlds, Magery is inborn advantage and cannot be gained after character creation. Great Wish may give an exception, but it is too risky. There is, however, another way to give Magery to a nonmage. The method witten below enables a nonmage to gain Magery 1 without using Great Wish:

  1. Prepare a master mage, a nonmage subject, a scapegoat, a Wraith item, and a "jar" for Soul Jar. A master mage must be able to cast all of Dispel Posession, Exchange Bodies, Permanent Posession and Soul Jar.
  2. Let the master mage cast Permanent Posession to the scapegoat.
  3. Let the master mage in the scapegoat cast Exchange Bodies to the nonmage subject.
  4. Let the nonmage subject in the scapegoat wear a Wraith item and bocome a wraith. This makes the nonmage subject in the scapegoat have a wraith template (see GURPS Magic , P.160), which includes Magery 1.
  5. Let the master mage in the nonmage subject cast Soul Jar and trap the subject's soul in the "jar". This makes the scapegoat into a soulless body and the subject, now is a mage, loses all phisical and social traits in a wraith template.
  6. Let the master mage in the nonmage subject cast Exchange Bodies to the subject in the "jar". This makes the master mage be trapped in the "jar" and the subjest have his original body but with all mental traits in a wraith template, which includes Magery 1.
  7. Let the master mage in the "jar" cast Dispel Posession to himself. This makes the master mage have his original body.
  8. Let the subject lose Unfazeable or "buy off" his mental disadvantages and "Loves battle" quirk, if needed.
This method gives only Magery 1. However, some game masters want to replace Magery 1 in a wraith template with Magery 3. (Wraithes' racial innate spells need Magery 3.) In this case, The method above gives Magery 3. Furthermore, a new method written below also becomes possible:
  1. Prepare a master mage, a nonmage subject, a scapegoat and a Wraith item. A master mage must be able to cast and teach Exchange Bodies and its prerequisite spells.
  2. Let the master mage cast Exchange Bodies to the scapegoat.
  3. Let the master mage in the scapegoat cast Exchange Bodies to the nonmage subject.
  4. Let the master mage in the nonmage subject cast Exchange Bodies to the master mage. This makes the nonmage subject's mind and the scapegoat's mind swapped.
  5. Let the nonmage subject in the scapegoat wear a Wraith item and bocome a wraith. This makes the nonmage subject in the scapegoat have a wraith template, which includes Magery 3.
  6. Let the master mage teach Exchange Bodies and its prerequisite spells to the subject, now has Magery 3.
  7. Let the subject cast Exchange Bodies to the scapegoat in the subject. This makes the subjest have his original body but with all mental traits in a wraith template, which includes Magery 3.
  8. Let the subject lose Unfazeable or "buy off" his mental disadvantages and "Loves battle" quirk, if needed.
For these methods, the "key" is the fact that all of mental traits but Magery in a wraith template are can be forgot, lost, or "bought off". Note that these methods have some problems in energy and risks, for both of them use Exchange Bodies and Wraith.
